The Ultimate Insult

This was the second night I had worked on this particular meal. Mixing, tasting, stirring, simmering.

All day yesterday I had baked the pork roast. I smelled it, tantalizing my nostrils with it's meaty goodness that I could not have. Checking on it every hour. Taking it out of the oven at just the perfect point. The meat was practically falling off the bone.

I let it sit and cool while I made dinner. I thought of how good it would taste as I saw it sitting on the back of the stove.

After dinner was eaten and cleaned up I separated the cooled pork from the bone. I ground it finely in the food processor. Perfect. I mixed a special homemade barbecue sauce and stirred it into the pork. Then I sealed and refrigerated it overnight.

This afternoon I retrieved the waiting barbecue from the fridge and put it on the stove to simmer. I added a spice here and there, tasting as I went. Stirring, stirring... I must keep it stirred so it won't scorch on the bottom.

"Becky, will you please stir dinner for a second while I change Micah's diaper?"

She walked into the kitchen. She took the lid off and picked up the spoon. Pausing, she looked at the barbecue then back at me.

"What is this? It looks like cafeteria mush."

The ultimate insult. And they wonder why I hate cooking.

That's just not nice. Not to worry, though, someday she'll be a mom and one of her kids will say something equally as insulting. Oh, she'll get hers all right. We all do.

I'm with Burgh. She's gonna get hers some day!

As my son would say....dat not berry nice! Sorry to hear that your daughter has yet to mature her taste. Someday. She will someday.

Well at first I thought she was going to say something about a diaper resemblance. So really, it's not that bad. Besides, I really liked cafeteria food. Especially the peanut butter bars.

Oh, I appreciate all the work you went to! I get the same kind of response too, though.

Ugh . . . this is precisely why I don't really "cook" things for my tribe anymore. I am met with nothing but disapproval!

I get that from my husband. I am a yankee and so my food is a bit blah compaired to his southern cajun liking. So, he always adds stuff to his plate after we all sit down. It almost makes me feel like I really can't cook and he put the spicy stuff on it to cover up the bad taste!! LOL!!
As long as the food tastes good it doesn't matter what it looks like, right?

Will you hate me if I say, based on your description, that is EXACTLY what it sounds like it looks like!

Hallie :)

Ouch - that smarts! Oh well, when she's an adult she'll be bragging about what a good cook you were...

Gracie won't eat anything I cook if it hasn't come out of a box in the freezer lately. Its like she's on a non-processed food boycott. I try not to feel insulted when she makes the pukey sound when I force her to eat 6 bites "because you are six now!"...
