It's Just Hair, After All

The boys have jumped onto the bandwagon of growing their hair out. At first I was horrified and shocked by this kind of behavior because, quite frankly, I was raised better than that.

Sam tried making me see the error of my ways. It was just hair. It isn't like the boys were flirting with disrespect of elders, or threatening to run away from home, or experimenting with various weeds. In the general scheme of things, it was a very minor offense and if that's all we had to worry about we were good. And I realized that he was right.

So I swung the other way. I let them grow their hair out. And Sam was all they need a haircut. And I said it's just hair. It isn't a big deal.

But neither of our parents have embraced the new style. Both sets have taken it upon themselves to tell us when the boys need cuts. This? Annoys the heck out of me. Take these scenarios for example.

Last year, just after the start of school, my mom decided that Luke's hair was too long and trimmed his bangs. Normally she's very good at this, but for some reason she got it crooked. And cut it shorter to straighten it. But it didn't get straightened. It only got shorter along with the crooked. She stopped while it was in the really bad stage before it reached proportions of true horror. We were pretty upset about the whole thing, and even Luke declared that Grandma would never touch him with scissors again. But then Sam's dad decided that this short and crooked style was not working for him and tried fixing it. The only way to fix it was to practically shave his bangs off. So he did. And this? Made us as mad at him as we were at my mom. I know what you're thinking, it's just hair. And you're right. It was also the week before school pictures. We've got it all documented for the entire class of 2019 to laugh at forever.

We've had no other incidents after that because we didn't let either one of them live it down for a long, long time. But just a few weeks ago Sam's parents took Josh to see his cousins. We knew his hair was reaching the if we don't cut it they will proportions so we had it trimmed. And Sam's dad was present at the cutting when I declared "yep, that's great. I love it." And we sent Josh on his merry way. But when he came back I noticed that his ears were cut out from his long sideburns and his longer back. As in, a near perfect square for his ears to show through. I asked him what happened. Pappy happened.

But the last incident I can only blame on myself. Luke's hair was so long that they put it in ponytails at camp. Yep, they did. He was cute, too. But it was time for a trim. The last trim I gave him turned out so well that I duplicated the technique. Maybe I didn't twist my wrist like I should have, or maybe I didn't flick enough. At any rate, the cut was disastrous to say the least. I had to go to a professional to get it fixed. It was that kind of bad. And the worst part? His bangs are short. Like last year for school pictures kind of short. And school pictures are in 1 month. Here's hoping that it's enough time to grow out.

The poor boy will probably never cut his hair again.

Too funny. I have the same issues with my parents and Mister Man. My mom is forbidden from touching his hair, and he's trained to call me if Grandma picks up the scissors. We're still growing out the haircut she gave him ... last winter. In fact, when I got his hair cut in June, the stylist (I can't cut hair to save my life but know it) suggested that I skip the next haircut to help it even out more. And when we were out of town in Vegas last week... my mom kept saying that he needed a haircut and she'd take him. Not on your life!

You know... they *do* make extensions ;) For girls, usually, but they do....

it actually doesn't look too bad.
a month should be pretty good to at least take the scary-short edge off of it.

I very clearly remember our Funny (8 years old) coming up with the idea of growing his hair. It started in January. He has thick, coarse, curly/wavy hair. It has been growing for eight months. Not a trim, until last week. I vowed it would not get below his shoulders. Yes, in eight months it went from a buzz cut to his shoulders! Ugh! The grandparents hate it.

I think he looks sooooooo handsome. I just can't get over how pretty his eyes are.

Momma. You are in trouble in like 10 years or so.

At least he's smiling! He must not be too upset - and his eyes really jump out at you like that!

I decided to give myself a bang trim when I was in 7th grade...just awful...I cut them way to short, and it was right before school pictures too.

Honestly, I hardly notice his hair with that grin and those eyes.

He'll survive. I did.

To this day I still cringe every time I see the stylist take our her scissors . . . still.

Besides. With eyes like that, who would be looking at his hair???

I really don't think it looks that bad. I love his eyes! He is one handsome boy.

Oh, I LOVE that Luke. I'm with everyone else who says who cares about the hair when you can look at those eyes!!!

Jon had it in his head that anyone could give a guy a simple cut when we were first married. He thought we could save some bucks if I cut his hair. But when he got mocked in the locker room, he changed his tune. FAST.

We let Isaac grow his hair out all summer. He does NOT have the hair for the current long hair style. We convinced him to get it cut so it was cooler under his helmet. Yay!

Oh it's not so bad. The blue eyes cover a multitude of bad hair. I'm not allowed to go near any of my children's hair with sharp objects because of SO MANY bad hair incidents. I stopped letting MIL cut it as well after some similar cuts. Now both boys grow it out and we go to a Super Cuts around the corner for thin and trim.

Oatmeal Head decided to grow out his facial hair this summer. Be glad Luke's not at THAT stage yet! Think Shaggy from Scooby Doo. I was grateful he shaved it the night before school.

Gel. Gel and spike it up and no one will notice. Might as well, right?

Been there! Gave in to grandparents and bribed my boys to get cuts. They hated it. So the next time my husband cut their hair (once again giving into pressure from the g-parents.)

The hair really was okay to begin with. What were we thinking?

I'm glad my sister does hair. If I had kids I'll let the professional do it!

You've seen pictures of Bug with his long hair, right? Well, when he made the All Star Baseball team this year, the coach of that team was an ex-Marine. Meaning he's a firm believer in boys should have almost no hair at all on their heads. So, in the interest of conformity, maybe?... he offered Bug $30 if he'd let Coach cut his hair. With a number 4 clippers. All of it.

And since I'm raising a child to know the value of a dollar, he jumped all over that and made himself a quick $30. He figured he could grow it all back, anyway. :) Personally, I think he's hoping to make another $30 next baseball season. :)

We either leave it really long or shave it to a buzz around here. We've had way to many hair cutting incidents! The grandparents crack me up, getting in trouble with their kids for cutting the grandkid's hair :)

With baby blues like that you could wax his head and it would not matter!

Sweetie, I love you to pieces, but honestly... no more homemade cuts, em'k?

Right now both my boys need hair cuts. My oldest wants to grow it long. I am not too sure about that. I think his hair cut is cute. But I like the short boy look.

BWAHAHAHA!!

My mom used to trim my bangs in between haircuts when I was little. She always struggled to get them "even" and one time I remember she kept trimming and trimming until the bangs were so short that they stuck straight out from my forehead.

HAWT!

If his hair grows anything like my girls, he should be fine in a month!

I can't believe the grandparents would do that. Neither my parents or Hubby's parents would do that. My nephews like to wear their hair long, too. My sister finally made the oldest get it cut because it curled up under the ever present baseball cap.

Am I the only one that's bothered that someone other than his parents decided that his hair was too long and took it upon themselves to cut it? And are you kidding me that GROWN UPS in charge at camp put his hair in ponytails? PONYTAILS?!?! How humiliating!

I would be all kinds of hopping mad if either of those things happened!

I'm with tootsie farklepants. I can't believe that your and Sam's parents took it upon themselves to cut the kids hair. I would totally flip out. But that's me. And I won't even let my hubby near my toddler's head. I swear I'm never going to cut her beautiful locks!

As for Luke's latest cut, I don't think its that bad. And as others have said, that smile and those eyes totally detract from the hair!

I think he looks great! With those eyes and that great smile what's not to like? It's still hot maybe he will decide he likes his hair short, would be nice for you.
