Sign of the Times

The kids haven't yet figured out that Micah will do anything that they do. I stupidly announce to them all the time to "stop that, you're being a bad example. Micah does everything that you do." Thankfully they have selective hearing and when Mom is talking they're tuning out. Otherwise? Micah would be Out. Of. Control.

Becky stumbled upon Micah's imitating abilities one day by sheer accident and hasn't yet put two and two together that she can teach him any number of things. What did she teach him in one moment of sisterly love? To hold his ears and stick his tongue out. Niiiiiice. It's also a nice touch that he grins around that tongue in sheer delight.

"Stop teaching him that kind of stuff!" has been my mantra but do you think the kids will listen? I mean, what will the teacher think on his first day of school? How will he make friends like that? What kind of friends will he attract?!

But it's Daddy that takes the cake for inappropriate things to teach the offspring. (Yeh, that's you, Bud! Still hacked at this one!) He? Taught Mr. Imitation to make the Big Loser sign on his forehead. Shocked and appalled though I was, it was small consolation that he lacks the fine motor skills to actually make the L. It's more like he's rubbing his forehead. At least nobody will know what's going on. And as I was telling Daddy this, Micah looked at me, made a perfect little L on his forehead, stuck his tongue out and grinned so hard his cheeks hurt.

How can I not be proud of his fine motor skills, his cognitive abilities and his sense of humor? How, also, do I keep from smacking the smirk off his face when he calls people losers?

Kids. I'll tell ya.

that looks like a perfect L to me! and a perfectly smug face who is too proud of himself LOL

Kids do copy so much! Once, ok maybe more than once, I have been known to say "son of a b*tch" while watching sports. Once I stopped and just said "son of a ..." realizing that Kayla was sitting right there. She finished the phrase for me! Oops!

Nice one dad. I swear, they're the biggest kids of all. Micah is so cute though, he pulls it off well. And, yay for the fine motor skills!

Husbands, I tell ya! Mine taught our oldest that when she was two, just after the first Shrek came out. You know the beginning Smash Mouth song? Ya, she knew it word for word and would sing it at whim with the shape of an "L" on her forehead.

That is a pretty darn good "L" and on the bright side, who could honestly be offended when he's grinning like that.

You gotta love the pure delight on his face along with the gesture! He is a darling boy!

Karen - we love Shrek and know that song. Fortunately he's over the Shrek stage now and won't be putting two and two together.

I think Dads are good for that. They always seem to find good things to teach our kids!!

It sure look like Micah has got the "L" down. What a cutie.

If you can figure out how to keep Micah from calling people losers, please tell me. So I can somehow stop my husband--hopefully before he teaches our daughter the same sign. Urg!

My husband use to teach his nephew all types of things. But now my nephew is fighting back. Tanner was playing on a car hoist we have in the shop. He locked it and it wouldn't come done. So he asked Travis to stand on the hoist because there needed to be a lot of weight on it to make it come down. Talk about a burn.

He does look like a typical kindergartner! Besides, isn't that L some type of sign language?

Yeah, Punkin's favorite word right now is booty. Or poop, depending on the time of day. Where did she learn such lovely phrases, you ask? Why, from her older brother of course!

This is a time honored tradition. My brother proudly taught me the words to The Diarrhea Song, which I then proceeded to sing to our minister's wife. Ah, yes, a proud day for my mother!

That is the cutest picture... and well, there are a lot worse hand signals he could learn ;)

That reminds me of a fellow teacher who got one of the very low special ed kids to say, "Butthead," because as a term of endearment he called them all buttheads. It was his first word in a whole year, so his parents were not upset but THRILLED. Odd, huh?

Karen Meg - you are SO right. I didn't think of that.
