Celebrating Our World

Saturday, March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day.

I thought long and hard about what to post here in honor of such an occasion. But it all came down to this.

This is my baby. He's a boy. He's a son. He's a brother. And he is a much loved member of our family.

He has blue eyes. He has blonde hair. He has a smile that can light up a room. And he has an extra chromosome.

See how that doesn't really matter? He has so much more in common with the rest of us than he has differences. We choose to focus on what's important.

And we're learning things from our son that we will never master. Micah loves unconditionally. He sees everyone at face value and never judges. He will never lose the joy and wonder of childhood.

I wish that I could be more like my son. The one with the disability. That one.

Yeah, I hear you. I wish I was more like him too. Interesting what we learn from our children isn't it? Enjoy the day!

Karen, that was so well put. I agree with you and wish everyone could be more like Micah. I hope you enjoyed the day with him!

Awwww! I love this post. And I love your son (even though I've never met him). I wish it were legal for me to put up pics of all my students with Downs for tomorrow. I love them all so much.

My son lacks that extra chromosome and yet has his own special something (called autism) has made him all the more special to us. You are so right about him mastering what we will never master . . .

My Matthew, your Micah, our blessings.

For Downs Syndrom and Autism and all the rest -- may the world recognize the blessing rather than the tiny inconsistency.

Thank you for posting this. Thank you for reminding me to celebrate my son and our family's love for him and his special way of loving us unconditionally.

What a proud mom -- and so deservedly so. Those are some great pictures of your boy -- and I love that he's still got Woody hanging out with him, too!

That I think Micah rocks goes without saying. :)

And although I've already mentioned this earlier (well, I said it differently, but you know.... )

You ARE like Micah. You DO love unconditionally, accept strangers into your heart, and are a friend to even the most challenged.

The socks prove it.

I'm looking at the first photo and realizing just how much he has grown up since I last saw him. *sob*

Great post, Karen.

This is how unbelievably far behind I am on blogging (Lucas keeps me WAY too busy!) but I just had to say how much I love these pictures of Micah; and how you did this post...beautiful!
