Twas The Night Before Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house
Every creature was stirring, but nary a mouse.
All the stockings were hung on the stair rail with care
But they fell off days ago before St. Nicholas was there.

The children were nestled beneath the tree
While envisioning gifts that were to be.
And mamma in her sweats, wearing no cap
Just wanted to settle down for a long winter's nap,

When down in the living room there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Down the stairs I flew like a flash,
and ran into the living room with a dash.

The light from the tree surely did show
That the kids were about to come to blows
Over whether or not Santa is for real
And how many cookies he might steal.

With a little mama wisdom, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment I had to side with St. Nick.
More rapid than toddlers when they're feeling naughty
I said he's real, but didn't sound snotty.

And I whistled, and sang, and read a story
All about Santa, and the gifts he's sporting
I reminded them all of Christmases past
And all the booty that Santa brought; they were aghast.

Now to get them to settle, one and all
I'll have to think of a way for myself to stall
So that I can stay awake long enough
To fill stockings with stuff

And then what to my wondering eyes should I see?
But the kids getting tired, oh what glee!
I cannot wait to get to bed
It's been a long week and I'm feeling like lead.

But Santa is real, of that I know
Because every year he makes a show
And sets out the gifts and fills each stocking
But never while a child is talking.

So I bid you good night, one and all
From the short even to the tall.
My dear children, Santa is near
And there's never any need to fear.

Because whether or not you believe,
Rest assured you will receive
All the good things that come
every year on Christmas Eve.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Ah, the original version of the poem! I'm so glad you've gotten the original text back for us! We were up till 3 am getting stocking/presents ready and of course the kids woke up at 6 so it was a pretty bleary eyed day for us but sweet nonetheless. Merry Christmas from our fam to yours!
