My parent's have a cabin about an hour away that they spend way too much time at. But they're retired, so what else are they expected to do with their time?
I was looking at the calendar and lo and behold we had a free Saturday. This does not happen very often in our house. Sam suggested going to the cabin ourselves and leaving the kids behind. I say I'll do this every single time we take the kids and yet it's never happened. So this time it did.
We coerced both sets of grandparents into dividing the kids, we made arrangements for the ponies to be fed, we got creative with the dog situation so that nobody had to mess with them at all, and threw a change of clothes into a bag. We were ready to go.
But the ponies knew something was going down that they weren't privy to. They ran through the fence just as we were packing up the car. If I was the swearing kind, they'd have gotten an earful. They may or may not have anyway. Ponies are sneaky and cunning. And they do not back down from a rousing game of tag. After running through the fields a few dozen times and getting nowhere, I finally got smart and saddled up one of the horses. I had the errant equine under control in no time. But I'm still mad at them because we still have to fix that fence.
We dropped off kids and finally got to the cabin late Friday night. And sat up waaaaayyyy past bedtime watching a movie. And then? I slept in until 9:00. Can you hear my sigh of utter bliss? I also got a nap Saturday afternoon. That's what you do when you're parents, you sleep when you get the chance. And you call it a mini vacation. And you love it.
But alas, we had to come back to reality. We picked up the boys and listened to melt down, fighting and tears on the way home. One of the dogs stood right in front of me and peed on the floor to welcome us back. And I got two vet bills in the mail.
Sometimes I wonder if going away is worth it.

Going away? TOTALLY worth it. Even if there's pee and bickering to welcome you home with.
And the ponies? I would have been cursing at them.
Thanks for stopping by my blog!!! :-)
Just send me the keys to that cabin and I'll run a very scientific experiment to figure out whether it's worth it or not. No need to thank me, I'm always there for you.
I would love to go away to a cabin, but can I go alone? I just would like a bit of peace and quite!! I am like you, when I get a vacation, all I want to do is sleep! I fully understand!! I am gald you got some rest and it sounds like you got a proper homecoming!
Ponies, you can't tell them anything!!
Dogs are great at welcoming you back like that. One time, I came home from a summer abroad and the first thing my dog did was pee on my leg.
Glad you got sleep!!
Um, yeah--totally worth it!
Why? "Can you hear my sigh of utter bliss?" You answered your own question!
wow- sounds like you needed that mini-vacation and maybe another one to recover from the coming home!
The bickering and vet bill would have been there either way (not sure about the pee). Without the vacation you wouldn't have had the nap. Totally worth it!
Just the sleeping in til 9:00 is worth. I couldn't tell you the last time I got to do that!
how wonderful you guys were able to get away and sneak in some extra sleep! :)
It is worth it. Keep doing as much as you can with your children.
Totally worth the effort! Great job on rounding up the ponies, hope you enjoyed your respite!! Have a blessed Sunday!

Yeah, that's payback for ya. It's usually worth it though. Those ponies sound like my kids.
It's gotta be worth it. A movie, sleeping and a nap? gotta be!
