On the Fourth Day of Christmas I Started Popping Pills

The other week I had a complete physical because it's been um, well, hmmmm. A lot of years since I've had one. My sister was recently diagnosed as diabetic just about time my other sister and mom were informed that they had high cholesterol. I figured I'd better know what's going on with me since I couldn't remember when I'd been to the doctor last. Just so I know what's killing me slowly while I sleep, you know.

So I hauled myself to the hospital and allowed them to suck tube after tube after never ending tube of blood from my fragile self. And I waited. Several days. And two weeks. And then I got the earth shattering results that I have a vitamin D deficiency. Yeh, I'm glad, too. While osteoporosis is nothing to sneeze at, it's better than a lot of things that I could get. And I can just pop a few pills to take care of it, too.

Apparently it's worse than I thought, though. My doctor gave me a prescription for vitamin D. I filled it, but asked the pharmacist why I couldn't just get over the counter. She said these were concentrated doses. I figured that, but how many would I have to take of the others to equal them? I mean, if I could just toss back 4 or 5 a day, why bother going to the pharmacy?

No, it would be the equivalent of 20 pills to the 1 I take now.

I'll stick with the prescription, thank you very much. I guess I should learn to drink milk, huh?

The lucky, lucky winner of the Handwriting Without Tears book is Debbie Yost at Three Weddings.

Congrats! This is an awesome way to start the kiddos out. Unfortunately it wasn't without tears for Micah, so I'm glad I could hand it on to someone else. (It's brand new, unused. Don't worry.)

For the next giveaway we have a super fun tag pack. Small, yes. Fun, yes. Very much appreciated by recipients and givers of gifts alike. Yes, got that, too.

Leave me a comment, cross your fingers for the win. Look at it this way - chances are you're bound to win something in the 12 days, right? And you just can't pass up FREE. That's always good this time of year.

I'm going to be in the same boat. Lactose intolerance led me to have nothing but lemonade during my formative years. But, I gotta know - does this clog the poop deck?

Wow those ARE some concentrated pills, holy cow!

Cute tags, btw :)

I would take a pill anyday rather than to drink a glass of milk...the only milk I drink is the one I use to dip my oreo cookies in lol

I love milk...I don't think I'll have this problem...but it's always something. I love the tags...count me in!

GET YE INTO THE SUNSHINE!!! On a daily basis and do something with your diet. IF you are a diet soda freak you need to quit. It leaches the good stuff like calcium from your body, and calcium is bonded to magnesium and vit d. See our grandparents had it just right. You get fresh air sunshine drink water eat your vegetables drink your milk and play outside. Weight bearing evercise. You do NOT want osteoporosis. I am more afraid of that than cancer, which is why i take my cahances and apply my vivelle dot hormone patch twice a week.

I love your giveaways- you are so crafty and awesome! I love checking in each day to get my little does of you and then see what I just might win. Hope the pills help your vitamin D issue!

The sun is really the best way to get your vitamin D. But you need to get out in it every day without sunscreen for a little while everyday. And good luck with the vitamins. One is way better than 20.

Cute tags!

Oh very cute -- much better than the scraps of wrapping paper that I use to write people's names on :)

And wow, THAT'S a vitamin D deficiency. I see this as full license to spend more time outside.

I figure you're just waiting for the BEST prize for me to win, right? Right? Tell me I'm not just THAT unlucky! (or unlicky as I first typed)

Don't worry too much about the vitamin D... bones are over-rated! ;-)
Glad you went and got all checked out! I did sometime in the past few months, now I just have to get in to have my boobs squished and I'm done!

I'm so glad you posted this. I'm overdue for my yearly physical.

Good call on the 1 pill. I'll have to tell my mom. She's also Vitamin D deficient.

I hate pills. I can not swallow the things without food. It is all in my head, I know. Sounds like you have one hefty pill there!
I found out a few months back that I have high cholesterol. Since I am still breastfeeding Ike the doctor is waiting to put me on meds. I DREAD that. Having to depend on a pill?! Does that mean I am getting old??

I didn't win yesterday????

D'oh!!!

Between my husband and I, we are a regular pharmacy. We're the unhealthiest healthy people you've ever met. I can't even take a multi-vitamin any more b/c I'm so sick of pills.

Dude... you have so stinkin' many readers, and only 12 days of giveaways.

It's a good thing you're my friend. Because I'm convinced that the random number generator thingy.... hates me.

Just out of curiousity, do you not like milk? You can always try fortified soy milk for calcium and D (plus sunshine of course). that's what we drink around my casa.

ciao,

I was recently diagnosed with Vitamin D definiciency also. My doc gave me the same prescription. But she said something was even more important...GET OUT INTO THE SUN.

I have not had a full physical done either. Sigh...Maybe another few years and I will have one.

Those are super cute tags!! I love the stockings!!

To answer some questions - I know that sunshine is the best vitD out there, and my favorite as well. But in December in the Laurel Highlands, the temps are frequently below freezing. Making it NOT my favorite any more.

And the milk thing. Yeh. Even if it wouldn't be for the lactose intolerance, I just don't like it. Strange flavor, really.

It's true. There are worse things. But I'd stick with the RX as well. 20 pills? That sounds like practice for suicide.

Yesterday I was think how it had been a couple days since I'd had my Rocking Pony dose and here I get the pleasant surprise that I won! Yay!

I keep thinking I need to get a physical also. I also need to set up the dreaded mamogram. I'm nearing 41 and have never had one. I guess I'll need to get on that soon. I'm glad your news wasn't too bad even with the prescription dose.

You'd think with all the time you're outside in the sun, doing your gardening or chasing Micah, that you'd not have such a severe deficiency. But, as deficiencies go, that's not too awful--and yay for 1 pill instead of 20 (bleh!). At least they didn't say you had lost your marbles. ;)
