On The Eleventh Day of Christmas We Learn The Truth About Santa

Luke told me the other day that he does not believe that Santa exists. I was a bit saddened by this. Becky I can understand, and even Josh. But Luke is still in his single digit years and one must believe when they're that young, right? Kids are growing up too fast without this happening yet. So I tried to get to the bottom of it so that I could set him on the straight and narrow concerning the way that we lie to our children, while actually not telling a lie.

We do make it a point to not lie to our children. Really. I don't think I've ever consciously said, "Santa is real." Or, "Santa is the one that brings your presents." It's more like a reassurance of faith for them. "Mama, is Santa real?" Well do you believe that he is? "Yes." Then he must be. It's such a tangled web that we weave when first we practice to deceive.

So anyway, I asked Luke why he thought Santa didn't exist. And braced myself for the answer that I must surely give.

Well, I think that he was driving his sleigh too close the polar bears and they ate him. I think that it's actually Mrs. Claus who delivers the presents on Christmas Eve now.

Oh.

Wow.

I had no idea.

There you go, then.

The crayon roll now belongs to Andrea at Swamp Suburbia. Your kids will love it, congrats. Email your address and I'll mail that your way.

I'm doing more wash cloths tonight. I know, we all hate repeats. But I remind you that you can't complain about free, right? So how about we compromise, and I'll choose two winners because it's a repeat. That make it fair? I thought so.

Don't get too excited about the picture. You're getting a set of 3, not dozens. Just thought I'd clarify that.

I'm just gonna timidly wave my hand from the back of the classroom. I've not won soooo many times this month, and I'm feeling quite invisible.

I stopped the belief when I was 7. Is that too young for you? I'm so sorry he got big on you.

Now that's some creativity there!

If it helps, my mom explained to me that Santa is the "spirit" of Christmas. Although there may not be a jolly old man who makes toys for all the good girls and boys, there is a certain feeling of happiness and joy which are part of the season. And, when one person does something nice and good for another, it continues that spirit of Christmas. I explained it in a little more detail over at my blog the other day. http://rebelliousflaw.blogspot.com/2008/12/defense-of-christmas.html

You have to watch out for those polar bears. You son is smart...he obviously knows only a woman could pull off delivering that many presents in that short of a timespan. ;)

Oh hilarious! But hey -- totally goes to show you that you need to ask questions first and answer them second. I've ALMOST gotten myself into trouble with various topics and the wee ones a fewwwww times :)

Huh. Who knew that polar bears were so vicious?

I mean, we always knew that Mrs. Clause could do it all, but it's really a shame that Santa had to meet his end as the late night snack of a polar bear den.

this reminds me of the story of the kid who asked "where did i come from?" ... and got the full-on birds and bees answer. to which he answered, "that's very interesting, but johnny comes from chicago. where did i come from?"

gotta listen to the question (or the answer)!

Okay, surely my luck WILL be better today. Right?

Love his response.

We have flat our told our kids that Santa is a story. Besides telling this to ALL the kids in his class, my son is now arguing that no indeed Santa is real. Okay. Fine. Whatever.

so glad you dodged that one! Some of my first graders don't believe anymore and it makes me want to cry!

I thought Mrs. Claus DID deliver the gifts. I mean, no guy I know is that organized. :) I could do without the polar bear, although big huge points for creativity.

YEA!!!! More washcloths. I love the designs.

I'm trying to keep my 11 year old from not believing. I continue to say to him that I believe in the spirit of santa claus. So far so good.

I love that! He is right you know, a man couldn't pull all of it together. It takes a special woman to do all of that planning.

I love the washclothes BTW.

I just lie to them. It's easier. Diva is in 1st grade and is driving me crazy with some of her questions. Can Santa die is one of my favorites. She's wise beyond her years and I don't know how much longer we have with her. However, I was talking to my bosses son (he works there) and he has 2 brothers with Fragile X. He was saying how his 30 year old brother still believes in Santa. It made me smile.

Love the patches! I've made some before, but I love those designs. I have trouble being that creative and tend to go with blue. How dull is that?

I use to use cloth wipes w/ my youngest .. we also use cloth diapers. I found cloth wipes hard to maintain tho :-) disposables are so convenient. But I do use cloth wipes as wash clothes!

Yours are 2 cute.

We all know Mrs. Claus has been the one running the show for centuries. Only a woman could handle that much responsibility.

Omigosh! I'm laughing SO HARD over here! Tell your boy that Santa's magic and can handle polar bears any day of the week.

Luke cracks me up. Where does he come up with this stuff? Too funny!

I was pretty young when I found out that Santa didn't exist. My sister's (who is older than me)friend told us. Inevitably, the younger siblings find out earlier because the older siblings already know...

I love those wash cloths, and with the new baby on the way, I could REALLY use them! Rig the drawing! Rig the drawing!

Wow! You are just giving everything away lately. The washcloths are adorable and my suggestion about Luke is to investigate his television programming... Santa eaten by polar bears? Bwahahah!
