Rollier Than Thou

Micah is a good eater. He always has been. He would come back with notes from pre-school saying that he was a good eater. When I met with his teacher, she always felt the need to comment that he ate well. As a kindergartner, we heard that Micah was still a good eater. The cafeteria aide, his personal aide, his teacher - they all feel the need to tell me this. I have to laugh.

I didn't realize that part of the reason that people in the know feel the need to tell me this is because apparently I wasn't in the know. From what I'm told, people with Down syndrome are picky eaters. (And there is one of those blanket statements that set some people on edge. Sorry, it's just what I've been told.) Whether it's the texture of certain foods, or the taste, that keeps others from eating the way Micah does, he certainly stands head and shoulders above the general cafeteria crowd. The boy will eat anything while at school. He hasn't met a food group that he hasn't loved.

Around here, we pray before meals. In our immediate family, we also hold hands during the prayer. It's just what we do. Micah knows this, but it seriously cramps his style.

So when we're praying, the boy doesn't have free hands. He has been known to try to eat during a prayer anyway. Take the other day, for instance. As we finished the prayer, I looked up to see Micah licking his peas. Except that peas are round little balls, and he was chasing them all over his plate with his tongue.

Life with the boy is never dull.

I Love the photo. :) And look how tan he is!

You've said before that Micah's still thin for his age and having Down's. That's especially amazing given how much he loves to eat. I take it it's because he's so active?

Well - at least he follows the tradition of your family prayer while finding a way to do what he wants at the same time! Smart!

Must be all that food.

The kid eats peas. That alone is impressive. The fact that he's willing to follow them around on his plate is even MORE impressive.

LOVE the picture. MAn, that kid is handsome!

HA! I have to laugh because the blanket statement doesn't apply to Dan's uncle either. He's 40 and has Downs and at every family gathering, he is PILING on the food. Seriously, it's impressive the stuff he eats. He also likes to sneak food during prayer ;) LOL he can also put away the beer. (So would that be a Blanket Statement Fail?)

Well, for some reason I thought the "Rollier" part of the post was going to be about a fat little rolly puppy. I don't know what I was thinking! ;-)

Hee hee! I should try that with Mister Man. While he isn't the greatest eater in terms of not being picky, he is a healthy eater who loves to eat!

I can just envision Micah chaing peas with his tongue around the plate. How cool! I'm the only one in my family that will even try them - I love me some peas!

We have six very picky eaters in our house, I have no idea where they get that from - just look at me. Number seven may be picky as well, he just doesn't have much of a choice at the moment. :)

Not only not dull, but way more fun. They are both adorable! (but when did he get so grown up?).

Is it possible Cooper and Micah were separated at birth?! Not so much on the peas (they are Maren's favorite), but on the handless eating technique . . . we have been there - oddly enough, when neither of his hands were unavailable.
