The Big Gynie Visit, DONE. Don't Worry, It's Safe to Read at Work.

Becky had that appointment with the OB/GYN today. For shame, is what all the others in the waiting room were thinking while I was sitting there with my 14 year old daughter.

The doctor had an ultrasound done again and the darn cyst GREW. So much for it just magically disappearing. He's still holding out hope though. And apparently the last tech mislead me. According to the doctor, women do NOT grow cysts every month during their monthly. It's one of those things that COULD happen, and we're so lucky to be the ones that can say IT DID. Yeah, us. There will be a 30% chance that Becky will have this as a recurring problem for the rest of her life. Poor kid. She's got a long ovulating life ahead of her. One that could be riddled with pain and bloody cysts.

Worst case scenario, of course, is still surgery. Laparoscopic surgery, just because I like to say the word. He'll see her back in a month, and in the meantime that cyst could spontaneously burst, causing an hour of excruciating pain. (If it's longer than an hour, THEN come in). It could develop a leak, causing several days of "irritating" pain. (Like he'd know - he doesn't even have ovaries. He probably also thinks that PMS cramps are like indigestion.) It could grow even more in which case it would get so heavy that it would roll the ovary so that it rested on the bottom, thereby effectively twisting off the blood supply to that particular ovary and eventually killing it. THAT doesn't sound painful at all.

And that's why he's all we have to do surgery to get rid of it if it reaches 6 centimeters. I have to say, I tend to agree with him. That last option doesn't sound like a good one.

And the birth control pill option was false as well. (That's why ultrasound techs aren't authorized to talk about cases - they know diddly.) It will prevent this from recurring, but it will do nothing to take care of what's already going down.

Be proud - I refrained from asking the good doctor how this would affect my chances of having grandchildren from my only daughter one day.

I am beginning to think of my life as a soap opera. There's always something major and kinda weird going on.

Ugh, cysts SUCK. I had a breast cyst sophomore year of HS and I remember FREAKING out. My grandma had a big cyst, as did my mom, and my grandma conceived four kids with just one ovary, so don't fret! If it comes to surgery you can talk to my mama, she had a laproscopic one too. I'm sure she's thrilled I'm discussing her internal organs on the internet.

I started at 14 with my first of many ovarian cysts. I had the scope done. I then developed an infection that landed me several days in the hospital. I do tend to have cysts now and then. The are quite painful. I always know when I have one. The last time, I should have go to the ER, but the pain finally subsided. I was told (all those years ago) that birth control pills can help reduce the amount of cysts that may develop.
FYI. By the time my cyst was removed, it was the size of a grapefruit. Yeah, they waited a bit long to remove it.

Your life won't be a soap opera until there is an exorcism involved. Until then it is just a made for T.V. movie! I hope the cyst resolves itself and there is no need for surgery.

(And I am proud of you for not expressing concern over the future grandchildren . . . and I am sure Becky is as well - the last thing any teenage girl wants is for her mom to be thinking of her having sex one day!)

I think I've mentioned to you before my long and intimate history with the whole ovarian cyst thing, right? Yeah, well, they didn't do my Lap until well AFTER I'd had kids.

And I'd been told at 14 that there was every probability that I would NEVER have kids. You've mostly met my boys, right? :)

One of whom doesn't want to have kids until he's 30ish. So that give us plenty of time to get Becky in good, working order. :)

(And it almost embarrasses me to admit to you, here in the privacy of your comment section, that had I been that mother in the waiting room with my daughter while everyone looked on in judgement? I most likely would have started talking to my daughter about how I surely hoped she was able to get THIS baby's daddy to help with daycare costs, since the daddies of the other two were no help at all!)

I feel bad for your daughter as I have had bad reproduction issues for twenty years.

I have had ovarian cysts for years. Sometimes every month (I had no idea that was rare-- eek).

I will say a prayer for your daughter. If the cyst ruptures have the pain pills on hand.

ABandCsMom - a grapefruit?! In all honesty, I didn't even know the ovaries were that big. I'll bet you were in a LOT of pain. SO sorry.

Your 'indigestion' comment had me laughing. Because men? Really do think that.

When my husband and I were dating he once came over when I said I didn't want to go out because I didn't feel well...I had cramps (mine used to come with fainting spells).

He thought he'd be helpful and brought me a bottle of Tums.

I visibly squirmed when you explained the twisted ovaries thing. OUCH.

Hope she gets it all cleared up!

poor baby what an introduction into all things female. I thought it was bad enough to just have a period, but to be 14 and already having big gyno issues? poor kid, buy her a present, take her to dinner, she needs a treat. chocolate?

SOunds like you got some not so hot info the first time around.

Hope all turns out well and no ovaries die in the process! That sounds way to painful.

Oh and sportsmama's thinking is sort of the way my brain thinks too :) love it

Man! That just sucks! Poor Becky. I'm so sorry she has to go through this. I hope it resolves on its own without any pain.

And I generally prefer female OB/Gyn docs--and now that I've had kids, I prefer ones who've had kids. I just like to feel that they really KNOW what I'm going through.

Both my sister and I have suffered from multiple cysts one that was the size if a baseball (me) although 4 days later I got appendicitis and the fever caused it to burst. He is crazy if he thinks the pain only lasts an hour and most docotrs prescribe some sort of pain med so you have it on hand to take if it does burst, she will most likely spend the day on the counch with a heating pad on her stomache. Just some advice here, but if she misses one day of bc she can develop another one, as proven by both me and my little sister. Make sure she takes them everyday as cysts are pretty much the worst and I was 21 being told that They might have to take my ovary. Fortunately it burst while I was on morphine waiting to have my appendix removed.

The errors in my last comment are both glaring, and utterly unforgivable. My only excuse is that I have a heinous sinus infection and can barely see, much less type.

Becoming Mommy - Tums? Tums?!! Like that would do any good. I think statements like that deserve a good kick in the jewels so they can better appreciate what we go through EVERY MONTH.

Super huge hugs to her and you. I've now lived through over 20 years of excruciating cramps. Never once had a month off (no pregnancies). Did have laproscopic surgery.

It all sucks. Big time.

HUGS!!!!

Yikes! I kept waiting for the good and happy news but umm I didn't get my payoff. Poor Becky, and poor you. Fingers crossed next month it's disappeared.

Why does the human body do that to us? I hope everything turns out for the best and you are blessed with many grandchildren.
