The Christmas Program

Tonight was the 1st-3rd grade Christmas program at school. These things are always tons of fun on so many levels. First of all, our little first grader was in it, and that makes it all good. Sadly, I never get to see much of my own kids when these events are going on. I'm just too busy watching other people's kids.

Take the girl that so enthusiastically sang "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" that she fell off the bleachers. And the boy who was doing rap moves while singing about Santa Claus. Not only have they made their parents incredibly proud, but they did a first rate job of entertaining the crowds. I know I was amused.

And seeing how the kids are dressed always makes for dinner table conversation for days to come. You had some kids in a white tee shirt and black jeans, and others in full Christmas regalia, including the silk, bows and patent leathers. My personal favorite was the girl in the evening gown. It looked like a little Marilyn Monroe knockoff, only in brown. She was also wearing 3" spikes. I may be a little off on the size, but I'm going conservative here. Seriously, they were the spikiest, strappiest hooker-like heels I've seen in a while. And she was in 3rd grade. She was also supposed to be a reindeer. I'd make sure your kids are sleeping when Santa comes if that's what the reindeer are looking like these days.

What are these parents thinking? Say it with me now - pregnant at 14!

I was just having a lovely conversation about stripper shoes with my brother-in-law. As he gave me grief about my stripper toddler, I pointed out that his 4-year old was wearing strappy, feather-covered, high-healed sandals at Thanksgiving dinner. When he didn't see the problem, I asked him what he would think if I was wearing those shoes. His answer? "You're a little old to be stripping."

Yikes, hooker shoes on a 3rd grader. So many things wrong with that sentence.

My neighbor has let her 6th grade daughter wear makeup since 2nd grade. Not just lip gloss, full fledged make-up better than what I can do. And outfits with short skirts and bellies hanging out. They are really nice people and I like them. I just don't understand it. They grow up fast enough, why rush it?

I'm sure if you looked closer you would have seen red toe nail polish, right?

I'd be a bit scared if I heard that reindeer pitter patter on my roof!

Yes, that is a bit young for 3" heels! I always catch myself watching all the other kids too - they are so funny. See ya. Kellan

I have an aquaintance that buys low rise bikini underwear for her 7 year old daughter. Gracie once told me that she made fun of her underwear because they went too high above her pants.

While I am no advocate for Gracie showing off her skivvies (mostly because it looks tacky), but I much prefer that over bum crack.

I don't know why everyone is so shocked that our kids are growing up too fast when we force them to be adults.

Have you SEEN some of the clothes out there for little girls? It truly frightens me that Punkin is getting older and I'm facing those fashion battles. I was always such a prude growing up that I never wanted to show too much skin.

It's truly too bad that you couldn't somehow sneak of photo of the girl in the dress and heels. You could have your own version of 3rd grade Fashion Don't!

BBM - I just cannot believe that these parents think this stuff is cute on kids, and you know they'd spaz when their teen daughter tried dressing like that. Or maybe not. When do you tell kids, "yes, that was cute then but not now"?

Madame Q - I completely agree! It's hard to find decent clothing for girls. My daughter is a preteen and it's even more difficult. She's just not understanding why we have dress standards that her friends don't.

EEEWWW! I don't like anything about the thougth of a 3rd grader in hooker heels!!
At our school Christmas thing we had a girl who was wearing bell earing and stood there shaking her head back and forth up and down through the entire program. I can only imagine what her parents were thinking watching their little girl (along with everyone else)

Yikes! That is just all kinds of wrong. Someone should slap her mother.

Modesty as a virtue is so important, especially to teenage girls, and somehow 3" heels don't quite qualify as being modest. God bless.

I wonder if Jamie Lynn Spears was wearing the exact same shoes at her 3rd grade Christmas program . . . perhaps a slightly different variation that allowed her to not get pregnant until 16?
