I'm Giving Away The Holiday Weekend

I didn't post last night. I'll bet you noticed, didn't you? (If you didn't, come a little closer and let me smack you around a bit.)

I didn't post because I was blogging live. The Burgh Bloggers got together for dinner and I was included among their ranks. How sweet is that? I met new people, endured a clueless waiter (hi, Brandon!), laughed and talked and ate, and then bailed on the group early because I'm lame and lifeless like that. (Sorry, guys.) I have no pictures to share (see the lame and lifeless bit) but you can go to any number of great blogs to see the recap. They'll tell the story better than I could, anyway. And don't forget to ask Gina about the hooker ho-down. She tells it so well.

I also found it very fitting that even though we had never met each other before (for the most part) and some of us had never read each others blogs (ahem) we had no lack of things to talk about. We're bloggers, what can we say.

A lot, apparently.
******************

And on to the weekend post. But wait - I have none! It's a holiday, people. You expect me to blog? I've got other things up my sleeve instead. It's time for a giveaway! Oh, yeh. You heard me. The last giveaway was freakin' genius, according to some of my dear readers. In case you missed it, here's a recap.

Fun though that was, I can't do it again. You only have one most embarrasing moment in life. Except for a few unlucky souls who had too many and won because of it. Seriously, if you weren't in on that contest you've gotta set aside some time and go read the comments. It'll make you wet yourself from sheer hysterical laughter. It's that kind of good.

But enough with the preliminaries. Here's what you're wanting to know. You'll be in the drawing for a shirt from the store. Your little one needs a Rocking Pony original. Just ask them, they'll tell you. It's what all the cool kids are wearing. And how are you going to win this for them? Leave me a comment.

Hold your horses there, bloggers. Not just any comment. You know it wouldn't be that easy. This time I need to know all about your most memorable family get-together. It could be tear-jerkingly touching. (New word, that jerkingly. Like?) It could be side-splittingly humorous. Or it could be all kinds of wrong. You've got a while to think about it since I won't be drawing a winner until Thursday.

Mark your calendars, girls! (And guys.) May 29 is not only my dear hubbs' birthday but the day you will become a winner. And here's the best part - if I get 100 comments I'll do 2 giveaways. Two free shirts, people! And one could be yours.

Now talk to me.

***Update****

You no longer have to tell a story. I've changed all the rules because I can. Simply leave me a comment and you're in. It's that simple. Good luck!

So glad you're giving us a few days to get our responses because my brain is FRIED from today.

Glad you had a good time last night...and thanks for linking to those other gals since you and Burgh are totally lazy and not posting good gossip. ;)

Ok,
Mine happened just the other day. I am a new mom (to a month old bahy) and we had mother's day at my sister's house this year. I was all excited about being a mom for mother's day. My son (AKA Chicken) was two weeks old and we dressed him up in his first outfit (up until then he had only been wearing sleepers). He had on a super cute onesie with a collar, overalls and a hoodie. I was so proud of him and thought he was the cutiest baby ever.
After brunch he woke up and needed to be fed. I asked my sister where I could nurse him and she told me to use her 10 month old daughter's room as there is a really comphy glider in there.
Being new to breast feeding I realized that I didn't know how to nurse my son without a nursing pillow. Luckily there was one right beside the glider. I did kind of think this would be slightly weird so I decided to mark the exact position the pillow was in, put it back where I found it and not ever tell anyone.
I guess being a new mom I'm also new to diapers. While nursing my son he let out a huge fart followed by a huge shit. I was kind of proud of him and continued to nurse him.
When he was finished I picked him up to burp him only to realize that he had shit through his diaper, onesie, overalls and onto the nursing pillow!
I had no idea what to do. How do you tell someone that your son shit on their daughter's nursing pillow? Luckily my sister was super cool about it and didn't care (or so she says). She did laugh the whole time I was re-changing him. That's because while I was changing him he peed on me and it went into his ear.
I had put a back-up sleeper into his diaper bag for just such an occasion only to realize that it was a bit too small for him. I was too emabarassed to admit this to anyone so I jammed him into it and told my husband to start the car.
Thankfully I had still not regained any of the pride I had lost while giving birth of it would of been a rough day!
Yep, I will always remember my first mother's day!

Karen, it was great to meet you -- even shouting over the noise and dodging flying objects from our inept waiter. Looking forward to meeting up again -- enjoy the rest of the non-bloggy weekend!

Can I literally say it happened an hour ago? So hysterical that I will have to have a whole post on it & will link to this. I think the t-shirt will be MINE all mine.

Christmas, 2002. The previous year had made me begin living my life differently (Sept 11th) and I was meeting my issues head on. One of which was to confront my Mom and Dad about their constant critisism. I treaded softly, gently and by the fourth or fifth insult, I shouted, to which they replied, "Well doesn't she have a temper" or something demeaning like that. I went to my room. They didn't speak to me the rest of the evening. On Christmas morning when my kids woke to see their presents, my parents had finished packing their car. They left the engine running while they watched the kids open their presents and then left. Without saying a word. On Christmas day. We then drove 9 hours to see Hubby's divorced parents where we managed to piss off his mom for not driving the extra hour to go to her (when we had tired children) and his Dad when my Hubby for some reason chose THAT day to tell him we had named someone else in our will to care for the children.
We do family gatherings like nobody!

If this doesn't at least get me in the finals I'll be shocked.

10 years ago my brother got married in Arkansas. He and his fiancĂ© were living in MO so they hired her friend as the wedding planner. She took $600 and did nothing. Bro later had to rent small room at a hotel with additional money. When we got to Arkansas, the friend had no food and expected my mom to help get the reception together. My parents had to buy food for meat trays and we sat in their hotel room putting them together. Then the friend started bossing my mom around telling her she needed to go help decorate the “reception hall”. My mom told her she was the mother of the groom and she was going to the rehearsal dinner. That didn’t go over well.

When we walked into the reception all of the bride’s family & friends were lined against the walls like a jr. high dance. No one was talking. This was a dry county so you could not drink, but you could buy a membership at the hotel bar and have up to 20 people drink with you. One of my BILs bought a membership so our family hung out in the bar away from the scary scene at the reception. Most of my large extended family could not make the trip so they sent cash gifts. As my brother and his wife opened gifts the friend took the money “for safe keeping.” After the reception the friend also tried to take all the leftover food which we paid for. At one point she was running around with a loaf of bread. Some of my siblings and my parents were concerned about her holding on to the gift money and we told my brother to get it back. It was over $600. He was afraid to upset his wife. When asked, the friend said she didn’t have it. Much discussion ensued. My older brother told my younger brother (groom) that he could get the money back but he’d tell her “If you don’t give the money back I’m going to rip your head off and sh*t down your neck.” My younger brother thought he’d better talk to his wife before he said ok to this. In the mean time, my mom had told the bride’s mom about the money. The friend was riding with the bride’s mom so she went and checked her car. Sure enough, she found the money and returned it. We thought things were “settled” until we heard yelling in the parking lot. Friend was still saying she didn’t take the money and was fighting with my older bother. We had to run out and break it up. This high class woman had apparently used the original money my brother had sent her to buy a tightly fitting dress for the wedding (& she was 3 months pregnant.) She had a toddler running around which she didn’t change and the poor child was soaked through. My sister tried to pick her up at one point and got wet.

Sorry this was so long, but I can’t post this on my blog for obvious reasons. I’m e-mailing you pictures of the bride and groom and wedding party.

My most memorable holiday get together was a few years ago at my aunt and uncle's house -- who have no kids mind you and decorate in things like chintz, to give you an idea. My husband and I were there (Mister Man wasn't born yet), two of my cousins were there with their then SOs, three sets of aunts and uncles were there, my parents, and a few of one of my cousin's friends were there, too. (Note: hosting uncle has no kids, he just likes to be with the "in" crowd.)

Sometime in the afternoon, after a bit of beer had been consumed, someone thought it would be a great idea if we had a wiffle ball game. Almost all the men (my dad and one uncle excluded) and a few of the women went to the backyard and chose up sides the old fashioned way.

By the time this was completed, the skies were looking a little ominous. By the time the first inning was over, it had started to sprinkle. Since there was no lightening, we kept playing.

When we saw lightening, we decided it was time to eat and abandoned the game. A deluge ensued. More beer was consumed. Someone thought it was a good idea to keep playing now that the lightening had stopped.

We all trooped back out there and played the rest of the game. It was actually quite fun. The rain had made the yard somewhat of a mud puddle (picture Woodstock) with all the running churning up a carefully manicured lawn. Once I saw the first person slip, I was out (as I was pregnant with Mister Man at the time -- and no, I wasn't consuming beer; sadly, I don't like it).

By the time the game was over, everyone playing was COVERED in mud. And grass. Towels were distributed after the first person came in and sat down on a couch. Some were required to change clothes in the garage and hose off before entering the house. A few stayed outside until they left because they were too filthy to come in.

My aunt was furious at her husband. Oh, I don't mean the hosting aunt. I mean the SIL of the oldest brother on my mom's side who is a busy body that no one likes who was appalled that her husband had dared to have fun in a way that didn't please her.

Needless to say, that gathering has gone down in family lore. And to this day, we have a game of wiffle ball whenever we get together (July 4 this year!). Fortunately, it hasn't rained again like it did that year, although we talk about it each time. I've probably jinxed it now, but it would be so worth it for one of those shirts. I was actually browsing the store yesterday trying to decide what I *really* wanted!

Today's holiday was much less eventful but definitely as much fun, in a totally different way (of course, it's posted).

Happy Memorial Day!

I've been trying to think of a memorable family get together, but just saw that you changed the rules, so now it's easier LOL Our Memorial Day was ... relaxing! We didn't go anywhere (no plans to after our trip to San Antonio last weekend!) Joe grilled sesame chicken cabobs (yummy!) and we had corn on the cob and potatoes with it. I watched the Celtics lose tonight to the Pistons :( And that's about it :)

Although we do not celebrate memorial day weekend here in Canada (we have Rememberance Day in Nov)my weekend was great, the monday, today? It was terrifying.

I got a phone call at 5 pm that my brother had been in a vehicular accident and was going to the ER. A front end loader crashed into the vehicle he was driving and totally removed the drivers side. The part where my brother was sitting.

He is hurt, obviously, but he is going to be OK in time. Thank God.

Our week-end was uneventful. Can't even remember Saturday. Wait. Now I do. We spoke to neighbors we haven't seen during the winter. On Sunday fished and FROZE and sunburned badly. Monday was work around the house day for one unfortunate husband and read a book day for his wife. All in all, a nice week-end.

Most memorable family get-together was Christmas three years ago. We all head out to my mother's for Christmas so that means either myself or my younger brother have to get my grandmother (mom's mom) and we also have to bring her back. Grandma used to live with mom and dad long long ago and she was "moved out" when I was 16. For YEARS grandma has been bitching behind my parents back about some money thing that happened when I was 4 well this Christmas Grandma said it to my parents. Fireworks ensued. There was yelling, screaming, accusations and tears. Happy Christmas everyone. My youngest brother worked at WalMart at the time so every year we would go there to hit the apres-Christmas sale AND use his employee discount. So when the fighting died down, youngest brother, me , my daughter and my mom escaped the house and did what you are supposed to do when the going gets tough - we went shopping LOL. By the time we got back, oldest younger brother is gone and so is grandma and Dad is freaking. Seems grandma went after Dad and when he yelled back she accused him of trying to HIT her! Luckily younger brother saw all of this and packed Grandma up and drove her the 45 minutes home before it could get really out of hand. Younger brother said she complained the whole way until he finally turned the radio up so loud he couldn't hear her any more. Since that day, Grandma and Mom haven't spoken one word, not one. My mother is an only child so it makes me sad that neither one can at least LIE and say they're sorry just for the sake of peace. It breaks my heart to think that they may never make up. Although on the bright side, Grandma is 86 and her memory is getting shifty so in a year or two she may completely forget all this LOL.

Must be a bad comment day as I'm stuck for the most memorable family get-together. I'll chime in on the Memorial Day, but outside of that I can only think of one happy moment for a family get-together, and that was our wedding (going on 7 years this 6/9). Photos and video were archived on my site

Since you changed the rules I wasn't going to comment, but after reading everyone's sad family memories, I thought I'd share a good one (because even though my fam is SCREWED UP, we generally love each other and have fun).
About 9 months before my paternal grandfather passed away from cancer, all my aunts and uncles drove back from all over and stayed at my grandpa's home for about a week. So there were all 10 of my grandfather's kids, some of the spouses (divorces runs rampant in dad's family), 14 of the 18 grandkids, and a mess of dogs and cats. We were all crammed into a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom house in the middle of August with no AC. All of us kids camped out in tents in the yard (except for the 2 youngest). We stayed up late laughing, playfully picking on each other (my sick grandpa was the reigning picker-onner...he'd pick on you regardless of race, creed, or color...ha ha!). Since we were up so late hollering at each other, teasing each other, playing massive card games of 12+ players, we'd all sleep in until 10 or 11am. My aunts would squeeze into the tiny kitchen and would cook the hell outa everything for breakfast; we'd have cold cut sandwiches; for dinner we had a few Lithuanian dishes for my grandpa (who really couldn't swallow, poor thing!) or we'd BBQ. One day we all (minus grandpa and his wife and my little cousins) smashed into 4 vehicles and drove 90 minutes to Six Flags Great America on the north side of Chicago (we lived on the south side). The drivers goofed off a little "racing" on the expressway. We'd park next to each other at the rest stops and do Chinese fire drills and end up in a different car for the remaining ride. The entire day we were at Great America we'd pair up with different people for each ride and do the best to all get on a ride at the same time (i.e. let others get in front of us), laugh hysterically at our ride pictures, and act completely stupid while on the rides themselves (to the point the ride operators were laughing at us). We were extremely loud and silly that whole day...and the whole week. Even though my grandpa was exhausted by all the people and activity, I hadn't seen him that happy in a very long time. None of us had had that much fun in a long time, or very much since (well, at least not to that level). It was great and would love to get back together with all my family like that again.

Shellie said...

Oh, that one was easier since it just happened (memory loss,ya know). Saturday was spent trying to get stuff done then doing dinner only to have my husband walk in with enough hot dogs and empanadas to last 2 days. So, no more cooking. Sunday, church, trying to get ready to go to my brother's when Thing 2 breaks his thumb. Monday, doctors and the eternal search for an x-ray technician, a hail storm and hubby barbecued dinner mmmmm! Good food! The kids stayed up too late watching Zathura. The End.

Our Memorial Day was...normal for us. Two parties. Two families. Two dinners. Wayyy too much food. Lots of laughing. Everyone asking where the heck we were going to move. Me getting more and more stressed about the subject by the minute.

*Sigh*

At least I got in some good food and some good laughs before I started getting stressed and obsessive about going home to check real estate listings again!!
