Movin' On Up

I had a web conference today. My very first. Who would have thought that a stay at home mom had those things? Mr. PR was explaining some things about the wonderful Springboard that Micah has on loan through him. I can program that thing from my computer, then download the changes onto his device. How cool is that?!

*sigh*

I'm in love with Prentke-Romich and the technology that allows my son to ask for food.

According to Mr. PR we're all making great strides with the Springboard. Micah is navigating and sequencing like a pro, and we as his parents are programming and customizing like old hands. This makes me happy. I'm an overachiever like that. What shocked me was the fact that Michah may outgrow his Springboard much sooner than we all thought. As in, perhaps by next summer he should be moving up to the next level, the *da da da* Vantage.

That sounds so much more high tech, doesn't it? That's because it is. Oh, the things that Vantage can do that the Springboard only wishes that it could. And yet, up until today I was so happy with my Micah's, cute little bright orange Springboard. Now I have device lust. I want that Vantage. More specifically, the Vantage Lite, because it's lighter and easier for Micah to lug around everywhere he goes. I want it in the GoGreen color that looks like new grass growing in the spring. That way it'll be easy to spot when he lays it down.

Mr. PR agreed wholeheartedly that Micah needed a Vantage. He also told me exactly what options I needed for that Vantage to help Micah make the most of it. It will be so much easier for Micah to navigate and use, that it's already amazing to me what that boy will learn.

I got a return phone call from The Children's Institute today as well. It was a productive day. The therapist there is writing the scrip to send in to purchase this thing. In the fun GoGreen color.

AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Yeh, I'm just a little bit excited to get things kicked off to get our very own Voice for Micah. And? We could have it in as little as a month. I'm not holding my breath because a month is a long time and even after years of lung capacity training like yelling at kids, I can't hold out that long. But it's coming.

The Vantage Lite will be Micah's Voice to keep until he finds his own.

That's great Karen, Micah is so lucky to have a mom who fights for him so well (and he's lucky to have a mom with such good taste. I love the GoGreen color)!!

Oh yay! This is so exciting. So do I read this correctly that Micah is going to get the new and improved version via this scrip and then the Springboard goes back? Gotta love days like this! :)

Have you tried other devices - like the Blink-Twice Tango! or the DynaVox V? They are both quite powerful. The Tango! is enticing, and the V has the largest room for personal growth among current AAC devices.

Anon - He tried other, much smaller, devices at school and wasn't interested in them. We originally looked at a DynaVox but we found the company's customer service to be lacking. I chose not to set myself up with a lifetime of waiting for returned phone calls.

I'm so glad that things are finally moving forward for you after being strangled by red tape for so long. Hooray for your advocacy and hooray for Micah!

He might be ready for a Vantage by next summer??? Really? I've never heard of a child move that fast. Wow!!

I never got to respond to your email to me about him usually requesting food with his AAC. But, yes, that is very common. I have one student that mostly uses his device for asking for computer. The trick is to get the child to use it for more than just high interest items. But it sounds like Micah is doing that now!

And make sure YOU are using the device too! All the time. More than him. Talk about what you are doing and thinking and saying and ask questions with the device. You are teaching him a new language. He needs to hear and see YOU use the language too for him to really learn it!

I have a meeting this week about updating Max's device. I'm going to read in-depth all your links here.
