Pass The Coffee, Er, I Mean the Ball

I am not into sports. Shocking as this may be to some, it's the truth. I enjoyed basketball and volleyball in high school, and played with some skill, too. But that's as far as it went. I never played anything even remotely organized, I didn't join leagues on weekends (do they have things like that?), and I didn't randomly shoot hoops around the house. In fact, I don't think we even had a basketball at home when we were growing up. I was all about the equine. I lived my life in the stable, and was just as happy shoveling muck as I was riding.

My children are just that. They have inherited my complete and utter lack of sportiness. Sam finds this a wee bit disappointing, but gamely tries making up for it by saying that he didn't get into his sports groove until he was in his teen years.

We have a daughter in her teen years and she has even less of a desire to try out for a team now than she did when she was 5. At 5 she played soccer, and watched the clouds blow across the sky while the ball rolled right past her feet. That's my girl.

Josh is making more of an effort. He loves golf and will take his clubs out and routinely lose balls in the field throughout the summer. He plays AYSO in the spring/summer and is making a grand effort at playing the game. Bless his heart, he too is my child.

This year Josh decided to play basketball. I signed him up for the clinics on Saturdays to learn the game before sending him on the traveling team. There are a lot of kids at these Saturday events so he's not the only one who needs to learn how to play the game. This is good for the self esteem.

His, not mine.

My self esteem is not helped at all by the 8:00 AM Saturday meetings. It appears that I'm the only slacker who sleeps in until the last possible moment, throws on acceptable clothing, slaps a little makeup on to hide the sleep wrinkles, and dons a hat to hide the bedhead. Everyone else? Shows up bright eyed and bushy tailed, coffee in one hand and their child's water bottle in the other, and camps there for the 2 hour duration. I leave my child at the mercy of his instructor because 2 hours allows me time to get a whole lot done at home before I have to run down to the school to pick him up again.

I'm just wondering why they had to schedule this at 8 in the AM, every Saturday for 10 weeks. I'm so not into sports.

Where's your team pride, mom? Heh. You and I we're cut from the same cloth with our kids. Though I spent my high school years on a basketball court ...

I hear ya.

I didn't do sports either, but I'm at soccer development every Friday night from 8 pm to 10 pm. I really know how to spend a Friday night, don't I? I did the first night tonight, from here on in it might be their Dad's turn to go. Yawn.

Once again I am glad I have girls! Yes, I know many girls play sports, but like you, I don't like sports and so far my girls have followed suit. Much to hubby's shagrin. I tell him, though, I'd be happy for one of the girls to start watching sports with him so I can be left alone. Peanut is his last chance. We almost got her a basketball goal for her birthday. I think that's where he has gone wrong. We tried the soccer thing with our oldest, but I hated it. Dance is much more my speed.

I was with you at the barn all the time... but I still did the softball and cheerleading. But I have a feeling the wee ones will be in the same boat as your kids. Here's hoping that I can wake up a little earlier than you are now though ;) At least I've been warned!

I completely agree! There has got to be some clinic somewhere that has more reasonable hours.
Oh and those sleep wrinkles? Makeup doesn't cover mine, it just settles in. I always end up looking like a knife wound survivor with a good make up job. :-)

For what it's worth, and if it helps at all....

I AM a total sports mom, and I still prefer to sleep until the last possible minute, pull my hair into a ponytail, put on the easiest clothes I can grab, throw on just enough makeup to make me look awake, and head out.

Doesn't affect the way the boys play one iota.

Oh, ugh. You are a good Mom for putting up with that.

8am? That is just not right.

I would do the same thing--run home to do things, or run errands. Two hours is a *long* time!

Our neighbors 11-year-old daughter is HUGE into soccer - as in practice 3-times-a-week and all day tournaments on Saturdays and Sundays . . . both hubby and I hope to high Heaven that neither of our kids take notice of her soccer balls - or that maybe they notice how often she is not at home playing with her friends. 'Cause that's how lazy we are!

Good for you for even letting him do it to begin with, and with the needs of your household, I say take advantage of those 2 hours!

Good point, what is it with people who like to exercise and early morning routines? I hate getting up early. which is why I took a day job and will be ready to shine before 7am 3 days a week. It'll darn near kill me too.

Oh girl, we could so sit somewhere and compare notes. I don't know where my kids came from, sport freaks. I spent my only sunshining saturday hauling superjock around to his training and then the coach says, tomorrow at 8:50, right? me: huh?
My husband conned me. He never ONCE let on that he was a sport freak until AFTER we married.

8am bad. Very bad. I teach a Saturday Sign Language class at 9:30 and that is hard enough!

8:00 am!? That's just obscene.

i think 8 a.m. saturday sports is grounds for murder.

just sayin'

and until the roo-girl and her cheerleading ways, not a single one of my kids (boys) were interested in sports. drama king picked daisies for a season of soccer. and z-man played t-ball once -- and ran the bases the wrong way.

priceless, really.

That is early. We don't do 8 AM!

Max's resources teacher told me she scheduled his IEP for 8 am. I laughed and asked if she was crazy!! She changed it to 11 for me. I had a meeting at 8:30 last week at school. That was really pushing it! I let them know that as well!
