If You've Never Seen the Movie, You'll be a Little Lost

Micah is a fan of the film industry. My goal is to keep my local Starbucks in business; his is to be sure that the classic films aren't forgotten. The boy loves Mary Poppins like I love a peppermint mocha. He dances with Burt on the rooftops almost daily. Except he dances from the couch to the coffee table. If he ever figures out how to reach our rooftop, we're in big trouble.

The Sound of Music is another daily must-see. Because of that film, he is in love with twirly skirts and ballroom dancing. We have all gotten roped into his dramatic recreations. Even Daddy, who had to play Liesl one day.

Knowing what a fan Micah is of the wonderfully timeless classics, I bought him a copy of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I knew that he'd love it, but I had no idea that it was destined to become an instant favorite.
Micah chooses favorite parts of a film, and after the particular action is over he'll rewind, rewatch, lather, rinse, repeat.  The Dancing Dolls is where we got stuck the very first night he watched Chitty. We watched the dolls interact with each other, and the king and queen get hijacked, and the children get rescued. And then it all started again.

Micah's bedtime came and I made him turn off his new classic love and head upstairs. After getting dressed, he stood in front of the mirror and sneezed, insisted that I wipe his nose, and sneezed again.  After three repeats of this scene, it finally dawned on me that he was a dancing doll.

Pinch his nose, he sneezes, he dances all over the place.

My boy is a living, walking movie clip. He can recreate just about any scene from dozens of films at the drop of a hat. If he could talk, he'd astound the world. As it is, he astounds us when we figure out the mad memorization skills he displays.

I have a great idea - Micah and Sarah - you know like Siskel and Ebert. Sarah is absolutely the same way. We have often referred to her as a movie savant. The other thing she does that blows us away is her ability to tell you where a movie is. She has a collection of over 400 VHS and DVD's and if you ask her where one is she will walk over to the shelves and point right at it even if it is hidden behind the front row.

That is hilarious - and precious. I love how he demonstrates his smarts! And I'm thinking we need to show that movie to the wee ones. I'd forgotten about it, but I loved it as a child!

Micah certainly has good taste in movies - and movie scenes. The dancing doll scene in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is one of my personal favorites too! I was dissapointed when that scene was altered in the live musical.

Umm, we are going to need some video :) I have a friend whose son has Aspergers and he LOVES movies too. For a long time it was Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat. He would pass out fliers and charge 25 cents to see him act out all his favorite parts. I must say, I did pay a few times to see it :)

OK, I have never seen either movie...

But Micah sounds cute and so smart to mimic the scenes.

Max has mimicked (sp?) movies/videos before and sometimes it takes me awhile to figure out what the heck he is doing!

I think that Micah would astound anyone that met him (I'm astounded just reading about him). Just keep him away from horror movies, okay? :)

I heart that guy.

Next stop, Dr. Dolittle! (The original, of course.)

oh boy the song is running thru my head--Chitty chitty bang bang we luv you" it's my husbands daughters favorite kid movie. Has he seen Willy Wonka? The old one. Micah is smart and acting without speach is a very cool art form. I can't wait for Toy Story 3 to come out myself!

I am so jealous. I try to get my kids to watch the classics with no avail. I actually watched Sound of Music this weekend. I've never been able to get them to sit through Mary Poppins (one of my favorites) but recently we did watch Chitty and they did like it. Not as much as Micah, though. :-)
