Vegetables and Highlights

I bought Organic Gardening for Dummies. I'm not sure why I went for the organic part but it never hurts to be a little more green. Unless it's with envy. The dummies part is completely understandable. They wrote these books just for people like me. For instance, I wasn't aware that there are cold crops and warm crops. I thought you just planted your garden and hoped for the best. Turns out I was wrong. Which actually explains a lot. So today I planted my spinach, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and carrots. I knew enough to have planted my onions a while back. They're coming up nicely. My book tells me that I want these in a few weeks before the last frost. We're bracing ourselves for the threat of snow tonight so here's hoping that the book is truly for dummies and won't be making a dummy out of me. I'd hate to have to go buy new veggies.

And on a completely unrelated and quite random note, I feel the need to discuss my hair. I'm a little impulsive sometimes. Like the day I got my hair cut last month and decided it would also be a good idea to put some highlights in it. I put in said highlights myself and was impressed that it did not turn funky colors or break my hair off at the roots. Even hubby liked it, which is big. Usually he says nothing, even if he does notice. But somehow I missed the memo that highlights need to be maintained often. As in, holy cow it's just been a month and HELLO there are dark roots that look hideous as they're growing out of my scalp. You'd think I'd know this stuff, but go back to the dummies section. Remember, they're written just for me. Next time I'll consult Highlights For Dummies before embarking on this long road.

Gotta love the Amish bargains. We used to frequent a farm that had THE cheapest produce and it was all so fresh and good.

I'm doing the garden thing for the first time ever this year, so maybe I need one of those books.

Bummer. Apparently I'm not going to have onions or garlic this year then. I can't start my garden until we pull out the old landscaping (and the nice men dig me a garden). And I can't do that until the daffodils and (expensive) tulips I want to save turn brown so I can dig up the bulbs to save and replant. And our last frost date (so I've learned!) is Mother's Day -- to be safe. Why do I feel like I'm going to end up buying the flats of half grown veggies and pretending that I'm "really" gardening? Kudos to you for getting it all together!

(And no comment on the highlights. Let's just say that my hair and dying are not meant to be friends.)

So I read "Highlights for Dummies" and all I could picture was that children's magazine... with crib notes!

That's why I hate hair coloring...

One solid color is all I can handle. And don't talk to me about gardening. I'll be making the trip to the nursery shortly for the already grown plants. :(

hahaha. that's why i do low-lights (yes, there is such a thing). a shade or two darker than your natural color (in my case apparently that's pretty hard, one more step and we're at black) and as they grow out they also fade! that's a bonus! not so much maintenance.

Do they have a flower gardening for Dummies book? I don't even attempt the vegetable gardens because I don't feel like feeding all the rabbits.

I had highlights done and I know all about the growth and needed upkeep and yet, I don't. It costs too much! It's not as noticable in my hair and frankly, I've done this so many times I just don't really care if it looks goofy. :)

I'm jealous that you have the space for vegetable gardening. I just plain don't and have to make do with containers on the deck. I guess I could plant a nice-sized garden on our hillside, but I might as well just throw a bunch of food to the deer and rabbits and spare myself all the digging and watering.

Hmm . . . you didn't learn from the hot mess that was my roots when we met? Mind you, that was 12 weeks of not highlighting. I'm too lazy and cheap to do it more often than that. I don't really care how bad it looks if we're being honest.

"I thought you just planted your garden and hoped for the best." Me too!!!

Um, yeah, I hate coloring my hair. But that's OK. In a few years it'll be all gray and I won't have to worry about the roots. *cries softly to self* Sad, but true.

highlights and I are not friends....I had highlights once and liked the look. But after a while grew tired of it. I tried waiting for it to grow out but got tired of the half and half look. I ended up having to get my hair died to my natural color. What a mess- just for hair!

I do not have a green thumb. My thumb is black, and plants run and hide when they see me coming. But I love to eat fresh garden veggies! I hope your gardening goes well!

I cannot do the hair upkeep at all, which is why my forays into hair coloring ended quickly. But awesome that you were able to do them yourself!

next set of highlights use a hair color only a little lighter than yours (as in, don't buy the "highlights" box...get actual hair color)...you'll at least see some depth to your hair tone and it won't be so funky growing out. Or give up and pay a professional (my route...)...and use the word "subtle" a LOT!!!

or the lowlights are a good idea, too. :)
