I was just saying last week that it's been a little while since we've been to the doctor or the vet. In fact, I think the last doctor drama we've had was Micah's surgery. That was over a month ago. But I had to go and open my big fat mouth. It wasn't 24 hours after that when Josh came home with his foot injury. So much for that streak of luck. But fun times can't just end without an encore. The dogs decided that they weren't getting their fair share of the drama.
Last week our spaniel had her first litter of puppies. I have never seen a dog so incredibly stupid in labor? She screamed in pain while running circles in her kennel. Her half born baby was dragging behind her, bouncing off the kennel floor. I tried my best to hold her still but she chose to take her fear and confusion out on me and bit my arm repeatedly. (Carefully, I might add. She is a very gentle dog.) When the puppy finally made an entrance into the world she was so relieved that she just lay there looking at me like what the heck was that and please tell me that it'll never happen again!
She had absolutely no clue that she'd just given birth. She's that variety of stupid.
I made sure the puppy was breathing and alive and let nature take it's course. It was all of about 2 minutes before she realized that there was a puppy in the kennel with her. And then she was all there's a puppy in here! How'd it get here? I love puppies! Wow, this is just so exciting - can I keep it?!
Thankfully she wised up to what was going down after the second puppy. (Yes, it was lather, rinse, repeat with Baby #2.)

Holy crud! I just read that entire post, exhaled loudly, and realized that I held my breath the same way that I do when wathcing the latest medical drama on primetime television! Karen Rocking Pony, DVM! (Do you like the name - I think it gives you a Native American/transplanted New Yorker feel . . . TV junkies will eat it up!)
I hope the remaining puppies continue to thrive and that you are able to post some pictures to go along with their drama . . . or at the very least a picture of Micah's forever-naked tush - cause some things you just can't get enough of.
I would be just like you, too involved!! Those poor puppies. At least you knew what to do. I would have been clueless. you did a great job. I do hope the rest make it.
I did kinda laugh with the Cocker mom. :) That poor first puppy can say that her momma dropped her on her head. I am glad she came to her senses. The puppy is really cute.
Oh, I'm glad you elaborated on the stupidness of the Spaniel...if it wasn't so upsetting to witness, I'm sure it would be kind of funny. Poor thing (although if I hadn't been all epiduraled-up, I might've been tempted to run around screaming while one of my kids made his entrance into the world. All I can say is good thing pups come out feet first, eh?
As for your Scottie and her babies? I'm sooo sorry. That is a really really tough deal. :( I hope you get some rest in-between takin' care of the babies (and dear Lord are they adorable).
Awww how sweet! I'm sorry that you lost some pups though :( I've never had a dog that hasn't been spayed or neutered so I've never experienced that but I'm certain I'd get attached too!
Oh, how sad. I can't imagine how hard that must be. It's nice to know there are people like you who run good kennels instead of those horrible puppy mills. It's great that you care, but I'm sorry you have so many difficult times. Hope the rest of the puppies continue to do well.
poor poor puppies.
I may have a very warped sense of humor, but this may very well be why God decided I had to adopt.
Poor puppies.
Awhh how many differnt kinds of dogs do you have?
Poor thing. She needed an epidural. Glad she liked her babies.
Oh man. Poor thing! I hope baby #2 was a bit better and all is well with mom and puppies.
I can't remember clearly, but I think this is how I gave birth to Francie . . . .
The imagery? Hurts my brain.
And yet more proof that children are far more hardy than we give them credit for? Head banging off the floor; now that's impressive. How many total were there? I won't even ask if you're going to try to breed this one again!
Yikes, I hope your puppies feel better soon. That little guy/gal is so freaking adorable!
so funny...i love the clueless dog. she'll be a good momma, when she remembers she has pups!
So how many puppies? Are they all doing well?
I was a midwife to a stupid cat in highschool once. She did the same thing!
Oh wow! I've had many dogs, but never one who had puppies. Wow! What an experience! How many puppies did she have?
:o) BJ
poor doggie, she did not know what she was in for uh... i thought it's in innate thing, they will just know what to do???
Holy crumbs Karen! This is why I don't think I could EVER have an animal that might give birth. I would be an utter disaster in that situation. I swear I would challenge that dog for the stupid prize.
I am curious though (because there are a few comments that confused me), how many puppies? Did they all make it? Did I miss something...AGAIN?
