Flashback Friday: Sisters Are So Gullible

When I was little I had very long hair. I sat on the ends of it, it was that long. It was the style then, you know. Just like my very favorite outfit was. It was a pink and green plaid polyester pants suit. Looking back at pictures of myself in that I feel both nostalgia (I did love that thing) and horror. Sadly, the latter doesn't outweigh the former. And it should.

But my long hair is what we're talking about. Kind of. I remember one day my mom had to trim the ends and I was all kinds of mad over that. It was my hair, I loved it, and if I wanted it cut I'd have it cut. But one doesn't argue with their mom. At least for long. She calmly explained that if she trimmed the ends it would help it grow faster because it would be healthier. I saw the light.

And I shared that light with my younger sister. Only somehow that light didn't shine the way it should have in the translation. Here's what I told her.

Mom said that the shorter you cut your hair, the faster it'll grow.

And I believed it. Because really, I was a good kid and didn't go about leading others astray in matters of such magnitude. Even as a young girl I knew how important a good 'do could be to one's self esteem.

So my sister, armed with this earth shattering information that apparently others were too stupid to act upon, asked my mom to cut her hair. Short. Mom questioned the wisdom of this but my sister was adamant so mom obliged. It was a very cute bob just below her ears. Sis was a little horrified at the shortness but knew that very soon it would be oh-so-long again.

The look on her face was priceless the next morning when she woke up and looked in the mirror. She fully expected it to be nearly as long as mine overnight. Mom was baffled as to the screams of disappointment and non-stop wailing and gnashing of teeth.

She didn't go anywhere without a ski cap on the rest of the summer.

Bwahahaha! Your poor sister! I'll bet the bob was really cute, too.

HAHAHAHA!

I totally had the bob inflicted upon me as a child. It most certainly was NOT self-inflicted - my mom thought (and still thinks) "long" hair (i.e. hair that goes below the collar on a woman) is ugly. And the bob totally gave me "fat face" even as a kid! Blech!

Oh the poor dear. I have a few misunderstandings with interpretation with my sister as well... but none to quite this magnitude.

My hair never got long enough to sit on, but I always wanted it that long. I go through a stage where I hate my hair and cut it off but then grow it again. I'm in the midst of a grow stage and right now... I'm up to (down to?) a few inches below my shoulders. It'll never be down to my elbows again (my high water mark), but I'm with you on loving long hair.

Too funny. My youngest daughter wants a cute short bob. Now I'm gonna go and ask 'why', before we go and get it done.

Isn't it amazing what kids will believe? It's a thousand wonders we were ever smart enough to stay alive long enough to grow up...

My hair used to be that long--I do remember sitting on it. I'm glad no one told me it would grow faster if I cut it cuz I might've ended up like your sister...
