It Was An Anniversary Sort of Day

Today was our wedding anniversary. No, I didn't forget and accidentally post something else. It's just that life seems to go on whether you need to celebrate something or not.

What's that? How long have we been living in marital bliss? That would be debatable depending on what day you asked, or what time of day even. But the bliss part aside, we've been happily married for the past 16 years. Can you believe it?! I have a hard time with it myself.

If you want the mushy-mushy you can refer back to yesteryear's anniversary post. This year I'm gonna call it as it happened.

When you've been married this long you don't exactly wake up and start celebrating. Mostly because 4 kids are living here, and they all have lives that need tended to. I got the kids ready for school and Sam got ready for work. Just like always.

After work this morning I had to shuffle vehicles around and stopped in at the hospital to exchange car keys. That made the day a little extra special because we don't normally get to see each other at noon. That doesn't make it a nooner though.

He was late getting home for various reasons that had nothing to do with our anniversary, me, or gift giving. But when he did get here we packed Micah and a sippy cup into the car and went out for the evening.

Yes, we took the car. She's part of the whole anniversary celebration, after all. We were married exactly 4 days when we bought her brand new with 36 miles on her odometer. She smelled so new, and her paint job sparkled in the sunlight. Ah, there's nothing like that Malibu Blue. Sadly, we all 3 have deteriorated over the last 16 years and none of us even slightly resemble what we were in that honeymoon period.

But I digress. We went to an incredibly romantic restaurant (cough*cough*Chili's*cough*cough) and watched Micah light his tongue on fire eating a jalapeno. The waitress failed to bring milk until the flames nearly extinguished themselves. We spent the meal discussing the wonderful news I received today. (No, I'm not pregnant. I said it's wonderful.) The Children's Institute called and actually scheduled Micah this month. This sums up many steps in one and I feel as though my summer has not been in vain. That is the most wonderful anniversary gift ever. He'll be evaluated to see if there are any neurological reasons he's not talking besides Downs, and tested for a speaking device. The thought brings tears to my eyes. It's like a long awaited dream at this point. I'll keep you posted on how wonderful it actually is (or isn't) when it happens.

From the restaurant we headed to PetCo because we have 9 dogs that need to eat. Micah loves this store and pushes his own mini cart complete with very large flag so that parents can locate their kids easily when they run off. He had a blast. I got to spend money. It was a good day.

See how incredibly romantic a couple can be after being married so long? It gives you all something to look forward to.

Happy Anniversary, Karen! Yay yay yay on getting Micah in, too! That means you will have him in in less than 26 days. Way cool and definitely a great anniversary present!

Your anniversary sounds remarkably similar to the 5 that hubby and I have celebrate, and I don't think I would have it any other way! Doing our normal thing reminds me of how far we have come and how well we work together.

And WOOHOO on The Children's Institute! What a wonderful anniversary gift! I hope that it all goes smoothly and that you finally get some long awaited answers!

Mommaof4wife2r: We don't have a PetCo either. That one (and the Chilis) is an hour away. That is actually what made the anniversary special. The fact that Sam didn't whine about driving an hour for dinner for us and the dogs.

I think it sounds like a little slice of heaven! The truth is, things I NEVER thought I'd enjoy doing? I now love. For example - runing around the living room chasing after a baby. I think the definition of what makes you happy changes as time passes.

Anyway, glad you had a great anniversary - and GREAT news for Micah!

Happy Anniversary and yay for the news about Micah!

I used to want all kinds of gifts and wining and dining for our anniversary. Now I just want Rob to take out the trash and pick up the clothes off the floor.

And if he loads the dishwasher and gets the kids in bed, than he might have something to look forward to. :)

I loved this post because it's so true. Anniversaries do change over time, but they are still good. I love that you heard the good news about Micah on this day, and I love how you found joy in the simple things (I like Chili's, too). I would wish you a Happy Anniversary...but it looks as if you already had one!
