Who's The Smart One Now?

That Micah boy of ours is the most stubborn goat with two legs that I've ever had the privilege of parenting. The boy who cannot drink from a cup or a straw. That one.

One of his teachers at church informed me, rather innocently, that he drank from a cup. She didn't realize that he couldn't and just treated him like the other kids. I was in disbelief. I mean, it wasn't like we didn't try on a weekly basis to get him to at least attempt that cup drinking thing at home. But she was adamant - he wasn't wet from dumping it out and neither was the floor, and yet the cup was empty every day. She even watched him to be sure that he was swallowing.

And yet he still won't drink from a cup at home. The little stinker.

I informed his school teacher that he'll drink from a cup (for someone else) but cannot drink from a straw. Please provide a cup for him at lunch because the V-shape of the milk carton would be extremely difficult (if not impossible) for him. She assured me that it would happen.

One of the lunch room aides goes to church with us. She informed me that he drinks from his milk carton with a straw. She had no idea that he couldn't and just gave it to him on Day 1.

That little stinker.

Even last week when he lit his tongue on fire at Chili's he wouldn't drink from a straw because we were watching. His elaborate scheme would be discovered. And he has the nerve to laugh at us for offering it.

Today we took him out to eat with us and the kind waittress gave him a juice box. I poked the straw in for him and pretended that neither he nor the juice box existed. And he drank the entire thing.

That little stinker.

I have the feeling that our sippy cups will have a very unexplained and sudden demise.

He's a devious little creature, isn't he? SO reminds me of Little Miss!

So when the sippy cups disappear, will it involve a bonfire and you dancing and singing in circles?

If you throw them away, they will adapt.LOL

Whats he gonna do?Die of thirst.I think not.My toddler is stubborn like him.If you read my post about her pacifier you know she was very stubborn for 3 days. That was 3 weeks ago an yesterday she asked for it.Like she thought it would just magically appear and come back to her.

Have fun destroying the sippy cups!

I LOVE IT!!!!! :D

I remember a doctor once informed me that Matthew would never be potty trained nor eat from a spoon -- "Don't bother trying!" he admonished firmly. I just giggled and said, "Glad I didn't know that because he's been potty trained since 18 months and eating with a spoon and fork without issue." I politely looked away as his face went beet-red with embarrassment. (By the way, Matthew was my easiest potty trainee.) "Special" means smart around here too.

I love coming here to rejoice with you. My prayers include you SO OFTEN. Tonight it will be a prayer of rejoicing and thanksgiving.

Stay flexible and Micah will take you on the ride of your life. Some days you may even enjoy it! ; )

How sneaky, my kids perform better for others too, and hold out on me. Maybe they're just trying to prolong their childhood.

yep you have now comfirmed what I thought all along. He is a smart little boy. Attention makes a child feel powerful and they like it. You have figured out that a special needs kid has the whole house in control, right? He has been foolin you; aren't you excited though that he can do it??????? HEEEEHAWWWWW Watch mama pull a muscle doing backflips, whoooohoooo
Bet he can talk. Maybe they are onto something with this treat him like he's just like everybody else. Well to that I say DUH!!! Of course!
Kid falls down looks surprised, adults react jump up rub the owie and kid gets it. This would be my cue to pitch a fit.
Just a little example of us not quite being as smart as they are. It's brutal in life when you figure out your two year old or 4 year old has YOU wired. Humiliating. Can you tell you hit a nerve? This is a pyscho comment. don't worry I'll calm down.

Don't you wonder what he's gonna pull on you next?
I think most kids are probably smarter than their parents - either than or they've just better at running rings round us!

My son is the same way! I spend so much time adapting things to fit his "needs" and then he goes to school and they forget and then he'll do new things that I didn't know that he could do. It's funny how they can trick us and manipulate us without us even realizing it's happening!

Yay for new skills Micah!

Too funny! You are on to his tricks now though!

So if he's drinking from a cup and a straw could that mean he's talking too just not around you guys?

Its been his plan all along. He's brilliant, I tell ya!

And check him out...rockin' the maaaad straw skillz. :)

Haha! He is a little stinker. Sneaky, sneaky, boy.

Hee Hee that is pretty funny but only because I am not his mother. :)

My 6 year old did that with reading. She would pretend she couldn't do it at home. She was awesome at school.

Little stinkers!

While he may be stubborn he ain't stupid! Does it make you wonder if he could pee on a potty at school?

Sneaky little guy;)

Oh my goodness! He is a sneaky little stubborn boy! Good thing you were able to have those conversations so you're on to him now! :)

What a smarty-pants!!

I can imagine how stubborn he is. max is SO stubborn. Like you, if I ignore the whole situation then Max will do something when he thinks I won't notice. For example- he will lick the frosting off a cupcake when he thinks I won't notice. He won't eat the cupcake or pretty much anything sweet like that.

But anyway- Good for Micah drinking out of a straw and an open cup!! That can be challenging.

I am laughing SO HARD. He really is smarter than the others. Maybe the Downs is just a cover. :)

Madame Queen said...

There was a little boy with Downs in Bubba's class at daycare and he would always pull those kinds of tricks on the new teachers, until one of the old teachers would clue her in that he really COULD do a lot of the things he was pretending that he couldn't.

That Micah is a sneaky little booger!

that "little stinker" wraps me tighter around his finger with every post :-)

Maria (also Bia) said...

That little stinker, indeed. Why is it our children many times do things for others that they won't do at home? Case in point: my son spent the day with a friend, and later his Mom told me what a polite boy he was, how he cleared his plate, how he threw away his trash...and I kept thinking "HUH?!"

caramama said...

I think you are brilliant for just handing it to him without paying any attention or making it a big deal! You are totally outsmarting the smarty pants supergenius!

Debbie @ Three Weddings said...

Argh! Don't you just want to hang them from their toes sometimes! I know God made them so cute with those melt your heart eyes so we could handle all the tricks we would have played on us.

I have quite a few students with Downs that do the exact same thing. Adorable. But very tricky! ;)
