Eyes On The Back Of Your, Um, Back

I was talking with Micah's teacher the other day. This is always interesting. She relayed to me that he loves school, that he's a good eater, that he does very well imitating his classmates, that he plays mind games with his aide and that he's a little wee bit stubborn. (I reminded her that I'm his mom and I know that was a gross understatement on the stubborn part.)

She asked if he'd ever had a feeding tube, or chemo, or anything. I said that he was the healthiest little kid ever (and yet, his medical charts are uber thick) and doesn't even have so much as a heart murmur. (That's very common in Downs. All the doctors are in near disbelief when I say he's good to go.) So then she just outright asked what she wanted to know.

What are the white spots on his back?

Bwahahaha!!!!!

You know the kid ran nekkid all summer. And when one runs nekkid all summer they get a very nice tan. That boy's back is darker than a little Indian boy and I only wish that I could tan as beautifully as he does.

So about a month ago as I was changing him for bed I saw two little scabby scratched areas on his shoulder blades. My guess was that one of his siblings grabbed him by the ankles and drug him across the carpet, resulting in a nice rug rash. Before you go reporting me to the authorities, it was all in fun and games. The kids here think that kind of stuff is hilarious. Especially Micah.

Those scabby scratches fell off in due time, and left glaringly white skin instead of acorn brown. And the weird thing is that they're in perfect circles, symmetrically placed on his upper back. It really does look strange.

The teacher consulted the nurse on what those things could be, but they both came up with nothing. Because what are the odds of rug rash making glowing eyes on your back?

Disclaimer: Micah's teacher does not strip search her students. Micah being Micah, he's messy and tends to spill his milk on himself, or play in the water fountain, or some such fun to get himself wet every now and then. I send extra clothes for just these occasions, and they happily change him into dry for me. It was inevitable that at some point they would see his cute little nekkid back staring back at them.

That is AWESOME! He is too cute!

(The other day I had to explain to my mother why Cooper's left cheek was flaming red . . . um, first Maren pinched the crap out of it, and then he played some game that involved scooting across the carpet with his cheek planted firmly against it. Mom of the Year - send it on over this way!)

First of all, I wish I could have been as tan as Micah when I had to wear a yellow bridesmaid dress a few years ago. It would have looked so much better than my pasty whiteness.

And secondly, at the risk of sounding like a total wacko - don't those two little marks look like just the right placement for angel wings? :)

WOW is he tan. I haven't seen a picture of him like that in awhile, I guess! And thanks for the clarification because I would have had to ask (although DUH Little Miss's teacher sent her home in clean clothes daily for the first week and a half until I sent her a note saying it's ok if she gets a tiny bit wet or has a spot of dirt on her clothes). I love the marks... and I'm glad the teacher had the good sense to talk to the nurse AND to you without freaking out about it!

Mine never ended up with glowing eye things on their back. No, they got random pebbles UNDER the skin on knees, shins and their backs.

The pebbles are still there in his back, BTW, on the teenager.

What a tan!

Funny! That poor teacher was probably hoping he hadn't been mysteriously scarred somehow!

On the left side of my face, right next to my eye, I have a series of four spots that just do. not. tan. No matter what. They happen to be EXACTLY in the shape of a paw print (one larger circle with three smaller circles above like toe prints). That's been good fun to explain for my entire life.

I like that Micah has eyes on his back. If he were a girl they would be in the back of his head, though.

All his brothers and sister need to do is get ahold of a sharpie and put a smilie face on there. Oh, I shouldn't give then any ideas!

You know his shoulder blades actually look like a smile...if you look from his head down. I love how you had to clarify the teacher - isn't it sad?

I am so bad, thinking ok draw in the eyes, too many pirate movies. He is so cute. He looks like he has a very "mild case" of Downs, if you can say it like that. He's such a beautiful fun child. Have you put potty words into his talking device yet? I am holding some hopeful thoughts!

That is pretty funny!! My kids think it is fun to do the same thing to each other.

On a totally different note, that is very clean bath water!! He must not have had to many spills that day. You put my kids in the tub and it is instantly brown water. Maybe I should bathe them more often :P

I think they look like angel wing attachment spots. Kudos to the teacher for talking to you about them (and for being patient enough to change his clothes and keep him clean/dry). I have three adopted sons who all have mongolian spots. It always freaks out the church nursery helpers. Not all of them come to me...

I'm just really impressed that the teacher took notice and called you on it. There's been some terrible things over here on the news from people who looked the other way at things that should have been reported.

Maybe he's about to grow some angel wings for you ;-)
