Who Are These People, Anyway?

A little boy came into the hospital the other day and prompted my husbands' coworkers to declare that he was "as cute as the Dickens." And this got everyone to thinking. Who are the Dickens? Why are their kids so incredibly cute that everyone uses them as the standard for cuteness?

And while we're at it, which Jones's are we all trying to keep up with? Was there ever an original Jones family, or was that just a chosen name? Because, quite frankly, I need to know what I'm keeping up with before I can begin the game.

Who else is out there that I need to know about? Anyone know of anyone else? My husband is pretty sure I needed to burden you with these thoughts on a Sunday afternoon. Because watching a Steelers game might not be enough to do.

What about Pete? "for Pete's sake!" I say that all the time and then think, who's Pete?

Glad I could help on a Sunday as WE watch the Patriots (who are btw, undefeated!!!)

Nice to know, btw, someone DOES read on Sunday - you made the wieners feel wanted!

Ah, yes. Pete. I really feel for that boy. He doesn't get blamed as often as "Nobody" but he takes more than his share of the heat. How could I have forgotten him?

There's always For the Lova Pete, too.

That darn Jones family!!!

Don't forget Flynn. My grandmother used to say we were "in like FLynn" whenever we did something especially good or lucky. I never knew who Flynn was or what exactly he was "in" to, but it seemed like a good thing.

(Someone once told me that "in like Flynn" had something to do with the popularity of movie star Errol Flynn way back in the day, but who knows if that's true. Seems as good an explanation as any other!)

Don't know about the Dickens or Jones, but Pete's my brother! Ok, probably not the same one.

Glad you all have winning teams to watch. Our team just lost it's 7th in a row. (The Chiefs) Course, I only care for my husband.

All my kids are as cute as the Dickens and I have never cared about keeping up with the Jones' - that's all I know about either family! Have a good week, Karen - see you later. Kellan

What about "Geeze Louise"? My grandmother used to say that all the time! I usually say that and maybe a couple others as I watch the my Eagles! But, who is Louise? and what did she do to be geezed all the time!
Great post!

Heavens to Betsy, are you trying to hurt my head with such deep thoughts?

We actually have neighbors named the Joneses. We can't keep up with them, though.

My sister married in to the Jones's, I never saw that one coming:)

I was catching up on your last couple of posts...LOL diaper ball!!!
I am definately going to hunt down some of those Wonder Jeans. I am so tired of those silly low cut things that let the top of your butt hang out everytime you bend over!!!
Thanks for the advice.

Those are really good questions...my husband was unable to help me answer them (when the Patriots are playing I am virtually invisible)! GO PATS!!!!

Don't forget Sam Hill. As in "Who in the Sam Hill are you?"

I have got a set of very deep, intellectual friends. I feel unworthy to be in your company. Thanks for helping me out.

I always thought "cute as the dickens" derived from the cute children/orphans found in any Dickens novel. But I could be making that up . . . God bless.

Growing up in dance classes, I was consistently told "Wrong way Hannah"... considering my name isn't Hannah and that the teacher for sure knew this, I always wondered WHO exactly is Hannah?
